Tracee Ellis Ross's "Curl Whisperer" Chuck Amos Shares His Hair-Care Essentials
The Expert Edit features interviews with specialists about the products they swear by in their chosen field. For the latest installment, we spoke to celebrity hairstylist Chuck Amos about his favorite hair products.
Chuck Amos had a way with hair long before he became a pro. At first, his clients were Barbie dolls, then mannequin heads, and eventually, the kids in his neighborhood growing up in the Berkshires. When he discovered — and learned — the magic of hair extensions, he "became a sensation" around town. After moving to New York City for college, he charged $10 a hairstyle for students around campus, who happened to intern at magazines and frequent fashion parties. Those connections landed him his first gig on a magazine cover for none other than Brandy. Then, the calls kept coming. From fashion shows in Milan and Paris to covers for Beyoncé and Oprah Winfrey, Amos's work became recognized worldwide. And over the years, he's become the go-to for the likes of Vanessa Williams and Tracee Ellis Ross.
"I didn't know that I was becoming an inspiration just by the love of what I do," he says. "I've come to find out that love is really the path to everything. If you have love and passion for something, the universe makes it happen for you."
Your hair is an extension of who you are and your personality.
While Amos is known as a "curl whisperer" and has achieved many firsts as a Black hairstylist, it's his understanding of hair — and its significance to a person — that has made him a legend in the industry. In fact, it's a lesson he learned early on in his career from Brandy. "I used to just 'do hair,' and only want the styles that were trendy and fashionable," he shares. "I tried so hard to put that on a lot of girls. I'd say, 'You have to do this because everyone's doing it in Paris and you'll make a big splash.' But after a while, Brandy said to me, 'Sometimes I don't like the hairstyles you're doing; sometimes I just want to be me.'"
That's when he realized: "Hair is emotional for people. God made us to have X amount of a thousand different facial expressions and you relate to other humans with your facial expressions. Hair is an extension of that. Your hair is an extension of who you are and your personality."
With that lesson, hair gigs became a true collaboration for Amos. "You can go as far as you can push the trend, and then you let them do what makes them comfortable within the hairstyle," he says. "It's not just you and it's not just about the business of show. That was my biggest learning, to really listen and to let the person shine."
One collab he's long been known for is his almost 30-year friendship with Tracee Ellis Ross, which he says "was fate in the cards and in the heavens that came." (Not only is his mother's name also Diana, but she was also born exactly two days after Diana Ross, Tracee's mom. Not to mention, Amos's mom even looks like Tracee, he says.) After he first met the mother-daughter duo to shoot the cover of Essence in 1996, he says Tracee called him right after and continued to book him over and over again. "We just grew up together, and I love all of her success and everything that's happening for her," he says.
Amos remembers Tracee always having "little concoctions" she made just for her hair, which eventually became the blueprint for her hair-care line, Pattern. "She knows her hair perfectly, so she always made my job easier. She trusts me to be the one who cuts her hair, which is really, really honorable because her hair is actually her crown," he says. "Tracee loves every second of her hair."
Ahead, Amos shares his top hair-care recommendations and must-have hair products in his styling kit, including his favorite hairspray, edge control, blow dryer, and more.

Best Hairspray According to Chuck Amos
Oribe Superfine Strong Hair Spray ($46)
While hairsprays can often make hair feel too heavy or stiff, Amos says Oribe's superfine spray holds hair in place but still allows it to comb out easily. "You can comb [the hair] right out and then spray again and freeze it where you want," he explains.
Plus, the light formula means "you're not torturing [your hair] with hairspray" and causing helmet hair.

Best Hair Oil According to Chuck Amos
Bumble and bumble Hairdresser's Invisible Oil Frizz-Reducing Hair Oil ($47)
This serum oil is a constant on set for Amos. "I always have it on my hands, re-wiping and re-swiping it. It's really light, yet it delivers a nice coating. It's light enough not to let the hair look helmet-y or hairsprayed down with products," he says. He especially likes to use the product on fine, straight hair because of its shine.

Best Edge Control According to Chuck Amos
Pattern Edge Control ($14)
"I've used many edge controls, but none are like Tracee's, and it's not just because she's a friend of mine," he says. "When I first used it, I was like, oh wow, this is it."
According to Amos, this edge control does it all: It smoothly lays edges and flyaways, has a long hold yet is still malleable, doesn't flake, and even has "a nice glide to it," which is uncommon for edge controls. "There's a lot of ones that don't have glide, so when you're trying to do the curl, your brush gets stuck, so you have to really go hard into the head, which can sometimes leave redness at the hairline," he says.

Best Heat Protectant According to Chuck Amos
Pantene Gold Series Thermal Heat Protector ($8, originally $10)
"There are so many protectors out there that just protect the hair, but with this one, you also get swing," Amos says. The spray coats each strand, making it thicker, so once you blow dry the hair, you'll see some added weight and swing. Amos especially recommends this heat protectant for lightweight hair.

Best Hair Product For Volume According to Chuck Amos
Bumble and bumble Thickening Blow-Dry Prep Spray ($35)
Amos says this volumizing formula, which has been in his kit since the '90s, is "the best" for lifting the roots and texturing the hair to feel thicker. It's his secret behind what he calls the "unicorn trick" for root-lifting, in which he gathers all of the hair to the front into the shape of a unicorn horn and applies the thickening spray at the root. "When you let [the hair] down, everything is lifted," he says.

Best Moisturizing Cream According to Chuck Amos
Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Crème ($54)
Amos has been a longtime fan of Oribe, but this particular product is the only moisturizing cream that's stayed with him for 15-plus years. "Whatever curl that I do — whether it's an air dry or barrel or curl with any texture hair — the shine works great for separating the curls and it seals each curl together," he says.
He particularly loves the formula for long days on set: "It revives a lot of the curls for me, because you just have to put a little on your hand and the curl will become more moisturized, bounce, and give you that shine."

Best Leave-In Conditioner According to Chuck Amos
Pattern Leave-In Conditioner ($28)
Amos swears by this leave-in conditioner for enhancing natural curls. "It's like it's formulated to give you the actual curl that you have in your hair," he says, noting it defines curls with a soft touch. "You can actually feel the softness within the hair, which is wonderful."
For those with curly hair, he recommends using the product on wet hair and diffusing or letting it air dry for natural, soft curls.

Best Cream For Coily Hair According to Chuck Amos
Ouidad Coil Infusion Give a Boost Styling + Shaping Gel Cream ($24, originally $30)
Amos recommends this gel cream for those with 3C to 4C curls because it "gives definition to tighter curls, but doesn't leave it flaky or crusty at all." The first time he tried this product, he says "it was like a magic trick." Prior to this discovery, he was using a stove iron to curl every single curl to make each look natural. "But with this product, we were able to just put it on, diffuse it, and actually see the real person's curls come through."

Best Hair Product to Hold Curls According to Chuck Amos
Bumble and bumble Hair Styling Cream ($33)
The best product for curling iron curls? This styling cream from Bumble and bumble, according to Amos. He promises it "really keeps the curl all day," in addition to leaving "no crunch."

Best Blow Dryer According to Chuck Amos
Pattern Blow Dryer with Four Attachments for Curly, Coily & Tight Texture Hair ($189)
Amos can't say enough good things about the Pattern blow dryer. From its quick drying time to the lockable cool shot and large barrel, this tool is a mainstay in the hairstylist's kit. "The big barrel is the magic because it dries your hair really fast. We dry Tracee's curls in 20 minutes," he says.
He also says the four attachments — brush, wide tooth comb, concentrator nozzle, and diffuser — are "the best attachments" for curly hair.

Best Straightener According to Chuck Amos
BaBylissPRO Nano Titanium Ionic Straightening Iron 1-1/4" ($160)
Amos's go-to flat iron is an OG favorite because of its versatility. The titanium plates and ionic technology keep the hair shiny and moisturized, so it's great for all hair textures, he explains. "It glides nice and smooth, and doesn't snap really harsh to your hair. I can do a one pass with a comb or a brush," he says.
